ENGL 138: Digital Storytelling

The English, Foreign Language, and English as a Second Language Department is offering a new course for the fall that will be interesting for many students, especially those who are interested in podcasts, content creation for social media, and writing for the web: ENGL 138 – Digital Storytelling.

Here is some course information.

Course Description: This course examines digital platforms with the purpose of understanding and analyzing the medium’s impact on contemporary storytelling and our culture. Students will read and write about selected articles, as well as learn and practice with a variety of digital platforms to cultivate cohesive and complex digital narratives.

Course Objectives: Upon completing the course, students will be able to:

  • Examine the essential elements of digital storytelling.
  • Recognize current and past discourse and theoretical approaches to digital storytelling.
  • Identify and analyze elements of images, texts, technologies and digital platforms that produce contextual meanings through writing, film and podcasts.
  • Demonstrate an understanding of cultural values as illustrated in the works through written and oral assignments.
  • Develop and produce various digital narrative assignments based on audience and purpose.
  • Research, construct and present a personal, cultural and/or community narrative in a digital storytelling project.
